Trustee Greg shares his story - Mental Health Awareness Week
Date published: 12.05.2025
I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 in my early 30s. I was briefly hospitalised and recovered over some months at home with my Mother’s support.
I have had a number of frightening manic episodes since, including another brief hospital stay following a mental health section. I know what it is like to be frightened and confused by my thoughts and feelings, to feel cut off from those around me, to feel deeply unsure of who I am.
I also know about recovery. I know about being open to accepting help. For me, supportive family and friends, good psychotherapy and medication have all helped. Accepting being ill and benefiting from my insight was, and still is, key.
I returned to a demanding job after each episode and have had a successful career as a doctor in North London. I have been well and fully functioning now for 18 years. I think my experience has enriched my role as a doctor.
In particular, my experience of recovery from a period of mental illness, has embedded the idea that love and acceptance, optimism and hope can lead towards the peace that comes with mental wellbeing and the opportunity to flourish.
